A Brief History

Thomas J. Haag began working at his first Amoco service station on the Emporia turnpike in 1966 He quickly rose to the assistant manager’s position and played a vital role in servings motorists travelling up and down the Kansas turnpike. In 1970 Amoco Oil Company offered Tom a brand new station of his own to operate in Topeka, Kansas. By this time Tom had married Ida L. Schmidt (from Olpe, Kansas) and they decided to take the location and move to Topeka. Ida remembers crying the entire way to Topeka, thinking they had made a “big” mistake!

Haag Incorporated has been in the gasoline business since 1970. Thomas J. Haag (President) went into business as a “Dealer” running a service station with Amoco Oil Company in 1970. He continued to work as a dealer throughout the next 30 years running anywhere from 1 to 4 locations. In the late 1980’s, Amoco began selling their assets to existing dealers. At that time, Haag Incorporated began purchasing each of the locations they were operating.

In the year 2000, BP merged with Amoco Oil Company and made a decision to sell all of their assets in the Topeka and Lawrence area and turn this territory into a “Jobber” market. By this time Haag Incorporated owned and operated 7 of the Amoco locations in Topeka. A total of 6 companies were invited to bid on the package of Amoco stations located in Topeka and Lawrence, and in December of 2000 Haag Inc. was awarded the bid. At this point, Haag Oil Company was born and was officially in the Wholesale business.

In 2001, Decker Oil Company approached Haag Oil Company about a possible purchase. Decker Oil Company was a 3-generation family ran business that had been in the Wholesale Oil and Fuel business since the 1950’s. In October 2001, Haag Oil Co purchased Decker Oil. Decker deals primarily with the selling of oil and fuels to farmers, municipalities and construction companies.

Haag Oil Company now supplies over 30 million gallons of oil and fuel annually to retail gas stations, government entities, public and private businesses as well as farmers and families in Topeka and surrounding communities. Haag Oil Company is one of the 10 largest Jobbers in the state of Kansas and the 2nd largest Amoco Fuel Marketer. Haag Oil continues to be a local, family ran company, employing over 125 people and has an emphasis in serving Topeka and the surrounding communities.
